Academic Enrichment for Relocated Students at UC San Diego was established as an official on-campus organization in September of 2022, by the founding members: Abby Chae (class of ‘25), Annette Lee (class of ‘25), Minyoung Ahn (class of ‘24), and Ryan Park (class of ‘24). A group of friends that collectively wished to partner with the off campus organization, San Diego Refugee Tutoring, an organization that strives to provide the educational support and supplies necessary for students from refugee backgrounds to thrive in their academics, and develop aspirations for their future. As an organization, AERS strives to raise and train passionate undergraduate students at UC San Diego, to serve as roll models and mentors for the bright young students who are in need of academic support. Our goal is to create a group of students that are excited to help the next generation and give back to the community via becoming tutors in a variety of subjects (*in support of SDRT and School on Wheels), participating in fundraising events, running hygiene/education supplies/clothing drives for the students, and much more.
Together, we will raise up intelligent and magnificent AERs (“heirs”) to our ever changing and fast-paced future.
*Becoming a tutor is the goal of our GBMs and info session nights for interested students, however, it does require a more in-depth orientation session created by the off-campus organization, San Diego Refugee Tutoring (SDRT) and/or School on Wheels, which AERS board members have gone through and will be able to guide interested students through.
To provide refugee/low income students adequate educational tools for success.
2022-2023 Academic Year
Hi everyone! I’m Abby…I’m currently a second year pursuing a degree in Global Health and I am a part of Seventh College. I love to spend time exercising whether it’s running, practicing yoga, riding a bike, you name it! I also love spending time with my friends and family. I started tutoring at SDRT last year, and made many special memories with the students I was able to tutor and build a relationship with. This year, in collaboration with my 3 other friends, I decided to bring the special opportunity to campus for more UCSD students to experience! I hope you will join us this year, I look forward to meeting you all :)
Hi guys! My name is Annette :) I'm a second-year Human Biology major here at UCSD! I joined SDRT after being introduced to the organization by Abby and found my passion for tutoring through there! I thought it was a great idea when Abby proposed to create a club giving opportunities for UCSD students to tutor and provide educational enrichment for refugees kids, and that is how I joined AERS. In my free time, I love to watch movies, read, sing, take walks at sunset, and create memories with loved ones. We hope you can join our community!
Hello, my name is Ryan! I'm a third-year at John Muir studying Human Biology. I personally fell in love with how the adult coordinators/tutors of SDRT carried themselves in taking care of all their students. They are amazing — sacrificing their time to pour into the refugee students. And with the organization's vision of providing opportunities for success to these students, I wanted to bring it here to our campus at UCSD. I'm very excited about AERS and all the things we could accomplish together! A bit about myself: I love to cook, go rock climbing, play volleyball with friends, and go on road trips.
Hi, I’m Minyoung! I’m a junior in Warren studying CS-bioinformatics. I’ve been a private tutor since high school, and though I haven’t tutored nearly as much since coming on campus, I’m so excited to rejoin a network that brings students eager to teach together with students eager to learn, and where everyone gets to do a bit of both. When I can get me hands on some free time, I like to spend it at an aquarium or zoo, or at the beach with friends, or even just at home reading (psychology, social science, and Jewish history have been recent hot topics), and listening to Broadway soundtracks on everlasting repeat.
